MEET OUR STAFF
SONS OF NORWAY FIFTH DISTRICT YOUTH DIRECTOR
A key resource from the Fifth District, our Youth Director oversees the operations of camp and is a part of the District Board.
SANDY "MARIT" OLSON
“Marit” is the Sons of Norway Youth Director and has also served as the Administrator for Masse Moro Norwegian Heritage Camp for the past three years. She loves everything Norwegian and is dedicated to the promotion of the “Magic of Masse Moro”. The mission for Sons of Norway is to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway. She feels that Masse Moro is a “perfect fit” to carry out this mission.
CHRIS "ANJA" ELWELL
“Anya” has been a Sons of Norway member for over 20 years and has served as president of her lodge, Norsota 1-602. She has also served on the District One Sons of Norway board as both Youth Director and Zone Director several times over the years. She retired from a career in teaching middle school last June and is excited to help keep the MAGIC OF MASSE MORO going. All three of her children attended Masse Moro for the entire time (ages 9-15) and all three came back and held staff positions. Masse Moro holds a very special place in “Anya’s” heart and her children’s. The photo is from Norway with her Norwegian grandson, Thomas, who will be attending camp when he turns 9.
2022 CAMP DIRECTORS
Camp Directors are onsite during the camp session and manage all of the day-to-day programming, staff, and functions of camp.
Ramona holds a degree in early childhood education from Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. She was a camper for 6 years and has been on staff since 2011. Her favorite part about camp is teaching Allsang and watching the campers get excited about their heritage. She is very excited to be back on the leadership team as co-director this year!
Geir holds a degree from Winona State University, where he also currently works. He has been a part of Masse Moro for many, many years starting his journey as a camper at the age of 9 years old. He has worked on staff as a Counselor, Senior Staff member, and Activities Director. He is thrilled to be part of the leadership team leading Masse Moro into it's 40th summer.
2022 COUNSELING & ACTIVITIES STAFF
Counseling and Activities staff stay onsite during the camp session, stay in cabins (or other camp buildings) and run the programs and activities at camp.
Kjetil is a filmmaker from Texas who enjoys all things Masse Moro! This will be his 5th year
on staff and he's so excited to get back to camp. He holds a B.S. in Film Production from
The University of Texas at Austin where he also studied Norwegian language and culture. He
loves goofing around, continuing camp traditions, and making sure everyone has a
welcoming experience. Kjetil loves connecting with and sharing his Norwegian roots and
can't wait to help deltakere make some life-long memories!
Ulfberht holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in physical education from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. He is husband to his wife Rachel and father to his young daughter Ailith. His favorite part of camp is learning about Norse literature, language, and especially the ancient runes. He is very excited to be joining the staff for the first time!
Nora is a student at Hollins University in the state of Virginia. When she’s not actively working on her clinical psychology and studio art coursework, she loves to journal and go out on the trails. This will be her second year as a camp counselor and she cannot wait to get back outside with the kids.
Thor is from Rockford, Illinois and is currently attending UW-Platteville for a degree in mechanical engineering. He's been at Masse Moro since he was 10 and this will be his second year as a staff member. He loves history and all things Vikings, even though he's a Bears fan. He also enjoys woodworking and metalworking, as well as woodburning. Camp his favorite part of the year and he can’t wait to be back!
Wood Carver Instructor
Ǻsgeir is a woodworker who studied Computer Science, Nordic Studies and Biology at Luther College. Aside from his focus on traditional Norwegian figure carving, he is devoted to researching and preserving traditional folk instruments and music. Although he has never attended Masse Moro in any role, he has taught woodcarving classes, conducted cultural demonstrations, and served as Vice President of Luther College's Norskklubb. He can hardly wait to join Masse Moro this year to be part of the amazing community and pass on his passion for Norwegian folk art.
Johanne has been the rosemaling instructor at Masse Moro since 2003. Rosemaling since her 20’s, she has taken many classes with Vesterheim Gold Medalists and even Norwegian rosemalers. In 2015-2017, she studied under Pam Rucinski, VGM the Gubrandsdal style of rosemaling through the Wisconsin Arts board apprenticeship program. She has traveled to Norway and Sweden with the Vesterheim folk art tours. In 2019 she was awarded a Fellowship through the American Scandinavian Foundation to study folk art painting in Sweden .
